Local issues in East Antrim
Below you will find some examples of how Roy is working
for the people of East Antrim on various issues. To keep upto date

From pre school provision, the controversy over the
Burns Report to adult education facilities in his constituency,
Roy has been active in raising equality issues, and highlighting
the need for more investment in education.
Roy has placed numerous parliamentary questions, spoken in Assembly
debates, written to boards and Departments and issued public statements.

The Issue: Commissioner for Children
What Roy is doing about it: In June
2001 Roy spoke in support of the establishment of a Commissioner
for Children in Northern Ireland, as recommended in a Report
by the Committee of the Centre.
The Issue: Inadequacies in Educational Provision
What Roy is doing about it: In November
2001 Roy highlighted inadequacies
in educational provision in his constituency during a debate
on the Programme for Government.
The Issue: Adult Education Provision
What Roy is doing about it: Roy highlighted the need for
increased adult education provision
in his constituency in January 2002.
The Issue: Roddensvale Special School
What Roy is doing about it: Roy lobbied hard for the establishment
of new school buildings at Roddensvale
Special School in Larne. He issued
this statement on 25th March 2002. Although funding was not
announced at this time, success did occur with the announcement
that funds would be released to build a new school on the site later
in the year.
The Issue: New Education Building in Larne
What Roy is doing about it: The issue of the delay in rebuilding
a further education building
in place of the old Larne Technical College was pushed by Roy alongside
his Ulster Unionist colleague, Ken Robinson MLA.

The issue of health and the crisis in the National
Health Service in Northern Ireland has affected the lives of many
people.
The Issue: As well as bringing constituency
cases directly to the attention of the Department, Roy has been
at the forefront in arguing that health should be prioritised in
the Executive's spending plans.
What Roy is doing about it: When the opportunity
to debate health issues in the Assembly has arisen, Roy has taken
the opportunity to argue for getter accountability and reform in
the NHS. He has also been a trenchant critic of the lack of decision
making at the top of the Department of Health and the inadequacy
of the Minister. Read more.
The Issue: The establishment of an ambulance
sub station in Carrickfergus.
What Roy is doing about it: This was omething
Roy had campaigned for over many months. He welcomed the announcement
on 2nd January 2002.
The Issue: Structure of Health Service.
What Roy is doing about it: In June
2002, speaking in a debate on the review of Public Administration,
Roy again highlighted health structures.

The Issue: Job losses in East Antrim.
What Roy is doing about it: In January 2002,
in wake of unwelcome job losses in the
telecommunications industry Roy initiated a debate in the Northern
Ireland Assembly about the economic situation in East Antrim. He
took the opportunity to bring to the attention of ministers the
importance of developing further education and training opportunities
in his Constituency. Read Roy's speech.
The Issue: More grants and assistance needed
for East Antrim companies.
What Roy is doing about it: Roy increased pressure
on government departments' including the Department for Enterprise
Trade and Investment, and the Department for Employment and Learning
to give more attention to the needs of commerce and industry in
East Antrim by redesignating parts of the constituency as new Targeting
Social Needs (TSN) areas- eligible for enhanced grants
